I wrote this on my Blackberry last night, and thought the interwebz ate it, but it's here! Woot!
so, pretend this is actually yesterday :)
So, in the middle of the night last night, Sam was woken by the sounds of late-night revelers leaving one of. our neighbour's houses. That, in itself is definitely not rare, as we do happen to live in an area of town that is...less refined, than other parts. Don't get me wrong, we live in a wonderful community in a beautiful province, but every place has its share of low-lifes and what have you, and some just happen to live near us.
Anyways.
So, Sam was aware that these people were leaving, but was sort of in that glorious place of awake-asleep wonder, when he heard a *crunch* and leapt out of bed to see a truck leaving our street (we live two houses from the dead-end part of a dead-end street). Since it was 2 am, he couldn't tell what had happened, and his windshield on his car had recently been smashed with a jar of jam (yes, jam, the jar was left in the ditch bedside the car where the asshole just let it land), he went running out to check for damage.
Now, we do have a detached garage, but Sam uses the garage for his project car and for storing 31 years of stuff, so we don't actually park any of our (3) driveable vehicles in there (I know it seems like overkill, but Sam's car is not winter drive able). We just park on the street in front of house, which isn't a big deal, usually since there's very little traffic-like maybe 1 non-resident car a day. I guess last night, it was just the wrong time for me to park there.
Sam called me at work this morning and asked me to check for damage in the daylightzn since he hadn't been able to see any, and lo! my headlight casing was cracked. Not a lot of damage, but seriously, when I can't afford a social life because I'm paying off the damn car, having to pay an ICBC deductible is not something I look forward to.
Our neighbour is a pretty nice, chill, pothead guy who's about my age, and he was super apologetic when we approaches him this afternoon. He immediately called his buddy, and an hour later the buddy showed up. He swore up and down that he didn't hit me, or that he didn't realize it had happened. Either way, he'll be paying to fix my headlight.
But now I can't decide if my anger has abated because Buddy has shown me that not all people are asshats, or if my faith in humanity has diminished slightly because he's taking responsibility because he was caught?
I do know, though, that it's shitty I pay insurance premiums, but still face the deductible if a hit-and-run were to occur to my car.

jam? seriously? that's a new one... it's interesting how people will fess up if they get caught, but will let it slide if they know they can get away with it. humans are evil that way...
Gah! That is so frustrating. I'm happy that he's paying to fix it but it's pretty lame that he's denying responsibility. And don't even get me started on ICBC! We pay so much for insurance and yet we're on the hook for the $300 deductible because our car got hit by scrap metal flying off a garbage truck. Fuck that!
You have to pay the deductible for a hit and run?! My car has been the victim of a hit and run twice. The first person was never found - so I paid the deductible. The second person was foud, and because she left the scene, her insurance company paid the deductible.
